What Can I Do?
Azusa has made great progress in attracting non-polluting industries, improving homes, cleaning up the city, advancing schools and becoming known as the gateway to the beautiful Angeles National Forest. All these improvements must be protected if the citizens of Azusa and neighboring towns are to continue benefiting from these advances.
So what can we all do about this danger that threatens health, natural beauty, civic reputation and real estate values in the entire San Gabriel Valley? The Save Van Tassel group believes that the best strategy is simply for all of us to:
- Learn about the problem, by reading the information on this website and anywhere else you can.
- Express your opinion to our government leaders. We will help by letting you know when there is an opportunity.
- Please - send us an e-mail to let us know if you feel we are on the right track. Give us your opinion.
In turn, we will let you know whenever there is a meeting, hearing or other event where you can voice your opinion. This internet connection is important, because the more people we can reach, the more people will show up and tell our government leaders how we expect them to respond.
Many of our members will continue to research the problem, to find out anything in the way of information that will help. Save Van Tassel will serve to store and distribute this data. Our internet communication network will help coordinate the work of researchers, local government and all of you who are concerned about this issue.
When Vulcan takes action, like filing an application to expand, we will spread the word about what is happening. When the city council is ready to receive input on the issue, then it will be important for citizens of Azusa to show up and let their council members know how they feel. It will be time for nearby cities to help in any way they can to assist their neighbors in Azusa to oppose Vulcan.
If you find any information that might help the cause, please send it to our e-mail address so it can be compiled and provided to all who can put it to effective use.
Tell your neighbors about this! Send us an e-mail! Ask that they visit our website and contact Save Van Tassel so they will hear about any urgent news. Signup for our email newsletter.
Our e-mail address is info@savevantassel.com Let us know how your opinion and suggestions.
After you do write to us, please check your spam-blocking program and anti-virus software to be sure it will accept mail from our address. Most programs allow you to put an address on a safe list, or favorites list (As in Hotmail), or in the address book (in AOL under screen name), to make sure the message is not kicked into a junk mail folder.
Wherever you live in the San Gabriel Valley, you can help by attending your City Council Meetings in person and monitoring their agenda online. Save Van Tassel will try to do the same, but please let us know if you see anything important to this issue. Below are links to the city websites for nearby San Gabriel Valley cities.

If and when the need arises, we will post contact information for writing to California and US senators, congressmen and assembly members. In the long run, our goal is to not only prevent Vulcan from expanding, but eventually completely prohibit this type of dirty, dangerous and costly operation anywhere near our cities.
There have been great ideas put forward like taking advantage of empty railroad cars (which will take trash out of the city to landfills in the desert) and using them on their empty return trip to bring in gravel for street repair, building construction and other legitimate needs.
The Sierra Club is promoting the idea of a string of parks along the San Gabriel River and Rio Hondo, called the Emerald Necklace. We will post information about that as it develops.
Another suggestion was to look forward someday toward creating a beautiful riverwalk along the San Gabriel River between Azusa and Duarte, much like the ones in San Antonio Texas, Pueblo Colorado and many other cities.

But for now, let's just try and prevent things from getting any worse than they already are.
