Stop Vulcan Mining in Azusa
November, 2007
In February, 2007 we warned you that Vulcan Materials was preparing to expand their aggregate mining operation at the Azusa Rock Quarry in Fish Canyon. On November 14, 2007 Vulcan Materials held an informational meeting with prominent citizens of Azusa to generate backing for their mining expansion plans. The PowerPoint presentation was a slick attempt to deceive Azusa citizens into agreeing to an expansion of Vulcan's conditional use permit (CUP). The original CUP allows mining of 190 of the 270 acres that Vulcan owns at the Azusa Rock site. According to their new proposal, Vulcan would stop mining on the east side of the quarry and begin restoration there in exchange for allowing expansion of mining into their westernmost 80 acre parcel. The proposal was framed deceptively as a decrease in total mining acres from 190 to 190. In reality, nearly all of the 190 acres has already been mined, and there has been no mining of the east side of the quarry since Vulcan acquired Azusa Rock Quarry from CalMat Co. in January, 1999. A map of the location shows that there is little more aggregate that can be extracted from the remaining east side of the CUP boundary. DO NOT BE DECEIVED! THE NEW PROPOSAL WILL EXPAND THE TOTAL ACRES MINED FROM 190 ACRES TO 270 ACRES.

Conclusion
Vulcan Materials is planning to expand mining into the additional 80 acres to expand their defacement of our Azusa mountains. Please join us to oppose this additional mining. Be prepared to voice your concern to Azusa's City Council and Mayor! You can contact your mayor and council at:
