Vulcan Materials Company Mining and Reclamation Plan: Distorting Reality

Vulcan Materials Company filed a report produced by Greystone Environmental Consultants (dated January 27, 2005) with the city of Azusa in September, 2005. This plan is the current proposal by Vulcan Materials to mine Fish Canyon and reclaim mined areas upon completion of each phase. Save Van Tassel examined this report and found some strange renderings of the proposed reclamation process. Compare Figure 27 below with an actual photo of the Azusa Rock site:

Upon examination of the photo and figure, we discovered that we could simulate the appearance found in Figure 27 by squishing our photo horizontally by 60%. See below:

Doing this distortion significantly reduced the apparent impact of the mining operation on the west side of the quarry. Was this an intentional deception or just sloppiness? Only Vulcan Materials Company knows for sure.
